Elea Data Centers announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tapestry (a team from Google’s X innovation lab), energy providers Axia Energia and Light, and the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, to advance Rio AI City, an initiative to transform Rio into one of the world’s largest metropolitan green data center hubs.
Rio AI City will launch with 1.5 gigawatts of certified renewable energy capacity by 2026, scaling to 3.2 GW by 2032. That’s enough power to support a massive AI computing infrastructure for training and running sophisticated applications at scale.
The involvement of X’s Tapestry team brings cutting-edge AI capabilities, while Axia and Light ensure reliable green energy delivery at the required scale.
“Rio AI City is more than a data center: it is a testament to Brazil’s future as a global leader in sustainable digital infrastructure and the dissemination of AI,” says Alessandro Lombardi, Chairman and Founder of Elea Data Centers.
With renewable energy at its core and delivery starting in 2026, Rio AI City positions Brazil as a serious contender in the global AI landscape.
