Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich once wrote, “Worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum.”
Something else as equally ineffective, according to Telia Carrier’s Chief Evangelist Mattias Fridström, is trying to prevent a DDoS attack by crossing your fingers. Not happening.
With mounting numbers and types of cybersecurity attacks that also show signs of increased intensity, it turns out another adage might hold the true answer to prevention: “The best defense is a good offense.” In this case, the offense against DDoS and other cybersecurity threats is an internet service provider that’s equipped to detect and prevent attacks, Fridström shared during his latest visit to JSA TV.
“The number of enterprises that are still in the blue about their DDoS protection scheme [is surprising],” Fridström said. “ A number of them have good protection, but there’s still a lot of them out there that just keep their fingers crossed that they won’t be attacked and really have no clue how to do it. Many ISPs can help you with protection against DDoS attacks … [and] making sure the traffic patterns are the same every day. Once we notice something is wrong, we send those packages of traffic to a blackhole in the internet.”
In a recent report from Telia Carrier, “The 2021 Enterprise Network Security Report,” numbers reveal some of the key stats that indicate the current frequency and reach of cybersecurity threats to enterprises today:
- 68% of enterprises reported that they experienced a DDoS attack in the past year
- 55% of enterprises have experienced a ransomware attack in the past year
- 78% said they’ve dealt with hundreds of cybersecurity threats in the past 12 months
At the end of the day, networks and enterprises working together is what will shut out attacks.
“The attackers are always going to be there,” he said. “All of us together can protect the networks. We can’t do it alone. Enterprises can’t do it alone. We need to work together. I think that’s the future of security really. The whole ecosystem needs to jump in here.”
