When we think about where data centers and mission-critical IT infrastructure is headed, there are few things we can forecast. However, with the current state of ESG priorities being what it is on both the customer and provider sides, greener and more sustainable solutions are practically a given. The pressure is on to create infrastructure that reduces its impact on global environments and climates, and the iMasons Climate Accord has been a major step forward in answering that call.
So, it’s only natural that iM Data Centers, a manufacturer of modular data centers shaping the future of IT infrastructure and a company with sustainability fanaticism at its core, should join this historic collaboration.
The Climate Accord represents a historic cooperative of companies committed to reducing carbon in digital infrastructure materials, products, and power. iM, across both iM Data Centers and its data center and IT services arm iM Critical, has prioritized the elimination of unnecessary natural resource depletions, integrated renewable energy and more across the entire spectrum of design, engineering, processes & products. These companies have proven their commitment to redefining sustainability in the data center, meaning that iM Data Centers’ participation in the iMasons Climate Accord accord aligns perfectly with its own dedications to ESG across its operations.
“It is essential that we have an open standard to report carbon in data center materials, products and power consumption methods,” comments Michael Roark, Founder and CEO of iM Data Centers. “Without it, there are no real, meaningful metrics to inform our contribution or direction, making progress difficult. iM has built its solutions to deliver quality, sustainable innovation while sincerely helping the planet and its residents. Our ESG initiatives include tracking detailed measurements and results for Climate Risk Reduction & Resilience, Land & Water Health, Waste Reduction, Economic & Community Improvement and Supply Chain Management. Still, there is so much we must do — and it must be done now. We are honored to be a part of the ICA and to join together with similarly dedicated entities in this industry, and we look forward to our collective journey.”
iMasons have reported that in 2021, 7 million data centers worldwide represented 105GW of power capacity, consuming 594TWhs of energy, which equates to 2.4% of global energy consumption. This data further underscores the critical need for a universal labeling system or mechanism for measuring embodied carbon over the life of data center materials and products.
“We established iMasons to unite the builders of the digital age,” said Dean Nelson, Chairman and Founder of Infrastructure Masons. “The iMasons Climate Accord represents an unprecedented collaboration between leading digital infrastructure companies to accelerate our journey to carbon neutrality. We are uniting to coordinate and multiply the efforts of the ICA firms to make meaningful and sustained progress toward that goal, and we are thrilled to welcome iM Data Centers into the accord.”
This announcement comes soon after the release of Greener Data, a multi-author, visionary book that features the voices, stories, and perspectives of leading decision-makers in the data center and network infrastructure industry. Michael Roark, iM’s Founder and CEO as well as a lifelong naturalist, was a contributor to this book, sharing both his and his companies’ perspectives on ESG imperatives and solutions.
