A common theme we’ve heard is that industry leaders were happy to get back to Hawaii to kick off PTC’22 and jumpstart the new year. Phillip Marangella, Chief Marketing & Product Officer for EdgeConneX, joined JSA TV at PTC’22 to discuss the company’s strategic investments and share what’s to come in 2022 and beyond.
With its new financial backer, EQT Infrastructure, EdgeConneX accelerated its aggressive growth plans in both existing and new markets globally, unlocking even greater capabilities, value, and innovations for its customers.
Here’s the scoop:
January 2021: South America is a hot spot for EdgeConneX’s Edge data center portfolio. The company built Santiago, SCL01, a facility to support anchor tenant Oracle, international service providers, and local Santiago businesses with 7MWs of high-quality, low-latency data center capacity. SCL02 is also in process and will enable this Santiago campus to meet continued demand from multiple service providers in the region.
February 2021: EdgeConneX announced its new Joint Venture with Adani Enterprises, forming AdaniConneX. The JV, nearing its first anniversary, is focused on building India’s leading green data center platform for enterprises and hyperscalers. The company will construct 1GW of data center capacity over the next decade – leading with sustainability and multiple renewable power sources.
March 2021: EdgeConneX broke ground on a new 600 m2, 8 MW N+1, carrier-neutral data center in the Sant Boi de Llobregat region of Spain, located 15 km from Barcelona city center.
April 2021: EdgeConneX scaled out its footprint with data center expansions in six strategic markets across North America. These expansions added nearly 20MWs of new capacity across its existing footprint in Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Miami, Detroit, and Chicago.
August 2021: EdgeConneX acquired Israel-based data center operator, Global Data Center (GDC), bringing two new facilities into the EdgeConneX global data center platform. This acquisition includes GDC’s state-of-the-art and highly secure underground facilities in Herzliya and Petah Tikva, near Tel Aviv.
December 2021: EdgeConneX debuted in Belgium to construct a large 20MW data center campus in Ternat, less than 15km from downtown Brussels.
December 2021: AsiaPac was also in EdgeConneX’s sights with its strategic investment in leading data center provider, Chayora. This partnership provides EdgeConneX with data center offerings in Beijing and Shanghai, two of the largest markets in China, along with the ability to scale out Chayora’s platform to other major markets throughout mainland China.
January 2022 and August 2021: In addition, EdgeConneX made several industry-veteran executive appointments that showcase the company’s commitment to responsible global expansion, advancement of next-generation technologies, and data center strategies. The executive bench now includes:

- Anand Ramesh, Senior Vice President of Advanced Technology:
- Sam Lee, Managing Director, Market and Commercial Development, Asia-Pacific
- Kelvin Fong, APAC Region, Managing Director
So, with all of that, it’s not surprising that the company was awarded Frost & Sullivan’s Competitive Strategy Leadership Award for 2021 in recognition of EdgeConneX’s flexible, customer-focused data center solutions. This Best Practices Award recognizes those that have displayed extraordinary leadership and innovation in their respective industries. With its innovative approach to the edge, automation, and interconnection with its data centers, EdgeConneX was a natural choice for the competitive strategy leadership award.
EdgeConneX did all this, despite the global pandemic – a true testament to its fantastic team, passion for excellence, and commitment to their customers.
Taking Care of Our Planet
As if all of that growth wasn’t enough, the company is also forging ahead globally on its overarching sustainability efforts. Phillip explained EdgeConneX’s Customers, People, Planet Vision – simply put: “If you take care of your customers, you take care of your people and lastly if you take care of the planet, everything else should by and large sort itself out.” He adds that listening to your customers and giving them what they want when they want it has been the secret of EdgeConneX success.
