If anyone doubted whether Utah was, in fact, becoming one of the fastest growing tech hubs in the U.S., DataBank was not among them. In fact, the company has invested —and continues to invest— in what has come to be known as the “Silicon Slopes,” which includes Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas. DataBank has six data centers in the state, and announced in 2021 it was breaking ground on the expansion of SLC6, its most recently established Utah data center, which is strategically situated in Bluffdale, minutes from downtown Salt Lake City.
“We are excited to bring this additional power capacity to our Granite Point Campus. This expansion underscores not only Utah’s position as one of the most opportune states for startups today; it also demonstrates the confidence DataBank has in the Salt Lake region’s future growth potential.” – Tony Qorri – DataBank Vice President of Construction
DataBank is constructing a 171,000 square foot data center with 100,000 square feet of raised flooring, half of which will be available day one. The expansion project establishes two new data halls, expected to open in October of this year, and will add 11 megawatts of power, available day one, bringing the total critical IT load to 22 megawatts.
“Salt Lake City is rapidly becoming a “go-to” data center destination, not only for local “Silicon Slopes” innovators, but also for those seeking an alternative to expensive data centers in Los Angeles, Santa Clara, San Jose, and San Francisco, said Qorri. “Utah’s extremely low occurrences of natural and man-made disasters makes it one of the safest data center locations in the United States. Additionally, the region boasts some of the highest Internet speeds in the Intermountain West, and among the highest in the nation. The SLC6 location has allowed us to support the need for premier cloud and colocation services.”
