Beyond the Beach: Segra Is Transforming Myrtle Beach into a Global Data Gateway

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has always been a go-to for sun and surf. But lately, it’s making waves in a completely different way. Segra just completed a major high-capacity fiber network expansion that officially puts it on the map as a premier international data hub.

Connecting the Carolinas to the World

Segra’s latest project is a 600G high-capacity route that links the Myrtle Beach Cable Landing Station directly to Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina.

This isn’t just about local speed. It’s also about global reach. By creating a direct inland path, Segra is making it easier for hyperscalers and carriers to move international data traffic from subsea cables straight into the heart of the U.S. infrastructure.

Why This Matters for Charlotte and Raleigh

In the past, most international data had to travel through Northern Virginia. Now, thanks to this new route, Charlotte and Atlanta are emerging as their own major “inland subsea aggregation markets.”

  • Faster Speeds: 600 Gb/s connectivity means data moves at lightning speed.
  • Better Reliability: The unique inland path provides “route diversity,” meaning there’s a backup way for data to travel if other coastal lines are congested.
  • Global Access: Direct connections to Argentina, Spain and Portugal are now more easily accessible from the Carolinas.

The Tech Powering the Growth

To pull this off, Segra teamed up with Ciena, using their WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) technology. On Day 1, the network already has 4 Tbps of capacity ready to go between Myrtle Beach, Charlotte and Raleigh.

Whether it’s a hyperscale provider moving massive amounts of data or a local business needing low-latency performance, Segra’s infrastructure is built to scale.
