Gray Oak Power has released Data Center Power Solutions: A Developer’s Guide to Behind-the-Meter Firm Power, a new guide that maps the fastest route to energization for AI data centers.
Utility service can take seven to 10 years to arrive, while dedicated generation built inside the fence can energize a site in two to four. The market has already moved, as more than one-third of all U.S. gas power capacity in development is now dedicated to on-site data center generation, according to Global Energy Monitor.
However, faster power also comes with the responsibility of a full plant to run. Stepping off the grid makes the developer responsible for fuel supply, permits, equipment and decades of operation. The guide is written for the teams weighing that trade and covers three areas:
- Why firm power is now a requirement, as rack densities approach 1 MW and AI workloads demand five nines (99.999%) reliability
- The regulatory landscape, from Texas Senate Bill 6 and ERCOT’s Batch Zero framework to FERC’s June 2026 show cause orders on large loads
- How to evaluate an energy partner, from creditworthiness and supply chain access to long-term operations and maintenance
The paper draws on Gray Oak Power’s 9.8 GW of power generation experience and 36+ power projects delivered. Its central argument is simple: the power plant is now part of the data center.
