COVID-19 Leads to Greater Food InsecurityDQE Harrisburg

Lisa Scales, President and CEO of the Food Bank was recently a guest on NPR to discuss the impact the pandemic has had on food insecurity in the U.S. The story states that approximately 26 million people “recently reported they sometimes or often or don’t have enough to eat.” Commonwealth statistics indicate the amount of Pittsburgh residents experiencing food insecurity is higher than the national average at 21.4%, so this donation comes at a timely moment.

According to the Food Bank, contributions of $100 can provide up to 500 meals. DQE’s gift is expected to help provide food to upwards of 75,000 individuals in need. The Food Bank serves communities well beyond Pittsburgh.

“With the pandemic and increased expenses during the colder months, the need in the community is greater now than ever. We are thankful for the continued support of DQE Communications. This $15,000 contribution means so much to our neighbors who are struggling to put food on the table during this holiday season.” – Lisa Scales, President and CEO, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Between March 16 and September 30, 2020, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank delivered over 25.2 million pounds of food to 11 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania. Donations like this are crucial to help stave off hunger.

“At DQE, the wellbeing of the Greater Pittsburgh area is quite important to us and we are proud to support a local non-profit organization like the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. As a local business ourselves, it’s part of our values to give back to lift up the region that we call home. Through a variety of programs as well as drive-up services, distribution partners and its warehouse, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is tackling an immense issue. We are happy to make this contribution on behalf of our customers to tackle food insecurity in the area.” – Jim Morozzi, CEO of DQE Communications.
