With a bold vision for the future, Scala Data Centers has just launched a key milestone in the digital evolution of São Paulo and beyond. This week, in collaboration with the Governor of São Paulo, leaders and more than 1,000 employees from Scala unveiled the next chapter in Latin America’s digital transformation: Phase 2 of the Tamboré Campus. As the leading data center campus in the region, this expansion positions Scala to fuel the upcoming wave of economic growth and innovation.
An Investment in the Future
The inauguration of Phase 2 brings an addition of 158 MW of IT capacity to the campus with two buildings—SGRUTB08 and SGRUTB12—already serving prominent Hyperscale clients. This phase also entails an investment of $1.13 billion U.S., which exceeds the costs associated with infrastructure projects such as the Santos Guarujá Tunnel, a submerged passage connecting the cities of Santos and Guarujá in Brazil. Upon completion of this phase, the Tamboré Campus will house six data centers with four under development, elevating its total capacity to over 200 MW.
The campus, upon full completion, will feature 17 buildings and three power substations, making it one of the top 10 largest data center campuses in the world, with a total capacity of 600 MW—equivalent to the energy consumption of all of Brasília.
Integrating Community and Environment
Scala’s expansion at Tamboré integrates with the surrounding community through initiatives aimed at improving urban mobility, expanding fiber and energy routes, and driving workforce development. These efforts are set to create approximately 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, fostering social inclusion and sharing the economic benefits of the campus’s growth. Governor Tarcísio de Freitas emphasized Scala’s investment as a glimpse into the future.
“If we waste even a little time in this dynamic market, we will fall behind. The wealth of nations is no longer in metals, gold, or industry; today, it resides in data, in the knowledge economy. São Paulo has become a hub for this new economy, a hub of data centers. Scala’s Tamboré Campus is a clear example of this. We are witnessing the future,” Governor Tarcísio de Freitas said.
Future-Proofing for AI and Beyond
Featuring Scala’s FutureProof design from the Center of Excellence in Engineering (CoE), the campus accommodates racks with variable and scalable densities to meet the growing demands of AI.The new buildings specifically designed to handle workloads efficiently using liquid cooling systems, allowing for high densities of up to 100kW per rack. Efficiency and sustainability are core principles of Scala’s approach, with the campus maintaining a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) below 1.4—an achievement recognized as the best in Latin America—and a Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) of zero, all while operating on 100% renewable energy sources.
A Vision for Latin America’s Digital Future
As Scala Data Centers expands its presence throughout Latin America, the Tamboré Campus reflects the company’s vision to create state-of-the-art facilities designed to handle mixed Cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads. By integrating cutting edge technology with initiatives and community engagement, Scala drives forward Latin America’s technological evolution while setting a global standard for large-scale data centers.
