1623 Farnam: 5G – An Innovation Journey

Wireless communications began in the 1800s based on the need to connect people. While we’ve come a long way from Morse code, the use of the telegraph, and the early days of the telephone, what remains today is the need for people to communicate. Communications have since evolved to include the transfer of more and more data, and as we moved from 1G in the 1980s to 5G in 2020, data rates increased, and user experiences improved. Today, in the 5G Era, the 5G future looks bright. We are getting much faster communications, our connection experiences have improved, and the amount of transmitted data has increased exponentially. The 5G Era is about using the network much more robustly – connecting everything, machine to machine – and increasing automation. As reported by the GSM Association, 5G networks are predicted to have more than 1.7 billion subscribers worldwide by 2025.

5G is set to become the new foundational technology that many other innovations run on. 1623 Farnam, a leading interconnected edge data center, notes in a recent article, 5G: Catalyzing Humanity’s Newest Revolution, that 5G is one of the technologies whose prospective reach has the potential to completely redefine our existence on a day-to-day level, bringing about speeds and capacities that open up new worlds through artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual realities, and beyond. The article explains that 5G refers to a new method of infrastructure deployment and network function, where nodes are at the very edge of the network, and connections between them (and back to data centers) are more robust than ever before. This infrastructure will allow for the lowest ever latencies, the fastest speeds, the highest capacities, and the greatest geographic coverage, which is precisely what innovative applications require. It will take time before this next-level network is fully fleshed out and all the necessary investment has been made and deployments completed, but we’re well on our way.

What awaits us on the other side of this 5G deployment (and what’s already being experienced across the world today) is a wealth of quality-of-life and quality-of-service improvements that we previously could only dream of.
