DE-CIX, the premium, carrier-neutral Internet exchange services provider, announces that its new Apollon Internet exchange in Palermo is now fully operational. DE-CIX Palermo is located at Telecom Italia Sparkle’s next-generation data center, “Sicily Hub”.
As Internet traffic volumes continue to grow at rapid rates throughout the Middle East and Africa, pressure is being put on Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to bring content closer to the edge. DE-CIX Palmero is connected to all cable landings in Sicily and is therefore perfectly situated to handle the influx of data.
“Sicily Hub” is positioned at the center of the Mediterranean and acts as the vibrant interconnection point for international and regional carriers that land their IP backbones in Palermo, as well as CDNs that collocate equipment in the facility. Leading the pack is Google and Limelight Networks, who have already begun preparation to peer on the new Palermo exchange.
“We founded DE-CIX Palermo to develop a new hub for Middle Eastern and African networks to reach Europe,” explains Harald A. Summa, CEO of DE-CIX. “There is tremendous growth happening in these regions. By creating a new hub in Palermo, the Internet experience of the end users will be improved, while networks will benefit from cost savings and better connectivity.”
DE-CIX Palermo is built on the award-winning DE-CIX Apollon platform. For more information on DE-CIX, please visit www.de-cix.net.
