The JSA Events team has been on the road! Shannon Ashe- Law and I were recently in Dallas for the 3rd Annual PEG Bandwidth Golf Tournament to benefit the Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation. JSA has been planning the tournament since its inception and we hold the event very near and dear to our hearts.
First, a little back story…PEG Bandwidth is PR and Marketing client of JSA. Three years ago, PEG Bandwidth’s SVP of Sales & Marketing and Co-Founder, Greg Ortyl reached out to our events team indicating he wanted to put on a golf tournament to support his family foundation, the Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation (MOHF) Starting from the ground up, we took on the event and have been working with Greg, PEG and MOHF ever since.
What is MOHF you ask? It is a foundation in the honor of Oakes Lee, the son of Greg and Becky Ortyl. Oakes was born in March of 2011 with a congenital heart defect, which happens to be the number one birth defect in the world. Oakes fought for 15 months, earning his name “Mighty Oakes” after going through a double lung transplant and a number of other taxing treatments, such as chemotherapy and blood transfusions. Sadly, Oakes lost his battle in June of 2012.
While Oakes received his care at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Greg and Becky met families that were going through similar situations but lacked financial support required to be with their little ones while in the hospital. MOHF’s mission is to assist families with not only financial but emotional support during their difficult time. 100% of the net tournament proceeds go directly to support the families of babies with congenital heart defects.
Even though we had some pretty bad weather the day of the tournament, the rain cleared up enough to get the golfers out on the course for a few hours. The golfers didn’t seem to mind, everyone was in great spirits (while soaking wet), knowing that their participation in the tournament was to support an amazing cause. This year was extra special because Becky, Isla and Esme (Greg and Becky’s two adorable little girls) flew in to be a part of the big event.
Rocking our JSA Events polos, Shannon and I managed to stuff 150 goodie bags, coordinate over 42 sponsors, hole in one cars, raffle prizes, awards, volunteers, rental clubs galore, and herd 130 grown men (and a few brave women) all without breaking a sweat. Oh and order the jumbo check! (You gotta have a jumbo check, right?)
Over the last 3 years the PEG Bandwidth Golf Tournament has raised over $273,000.00 for MOHF. JSA is honored to say we are a part this amazing annual event to honor Mighty Oakes and help support the families that are fighting alongside their little ones. #BeMighty
